3 out of 5 stars Poorly built device   July 6, 2010
Angelika Seidel
It just came in the mail. Overall impression, it appears really inexpensively built. When you try to open the screen portion, it makes a little noise (as if there are grains of sand there) and it does not open smoothly. Device does not appear to be able to withstand "rough life" in a bag filled with books. It will probably need a small protective compartment of some sort. I had a hard time inserting the battery properly; the little lid would not close. I finally did manage to close the lid, but because of the tiny compartment that fits the batteries, it gets a little tricky. Main concern, after the initial hassle of fitting the batteries correctly, is that the lid with the screen still does not open smoothly. I get this uneasy feeling that something will break.

On the positive note, it does look cute and is very small. It would be simply perfect if it was not built so cheaply.

4 out of 5 stars Better and worse in some ways   June 25, 2010

Compared to its predecessor, pronunciation is much clearer, but it does not present any alternative if the word you look up is not found.

5 out of 5 stars Franklin SCD-2100 electronic dictionary (11th edit)   May 26, 2010

This dictionary is so small and compact, it will fit nicely into a purse or backpack. It is easy to use and has an adequate database of vocabulary words. The screen is large enough to view many lines at one time. There is a font size feature: small, med, or large. Uses standard batteries. Comes with games, famous quotes, calculator, and other accessories. Can speak words too. The only thing I wish it had was the phonetic pronounciation of words. Highly recommended for students and for the avid book reader!

The Franklin dictionary is very easy to use. The buttons are large enough for me to press and type without making many mistakes. It really saves me time, because in research or projects, instead of having to heave a heavy dictionary onto my desk and flip throught the pages, i can just search and type in the word im looking for. Usually, if i read a book, i may run into some words that i dont understand. i do my best to keep them in the back of my head because i dont want to get to get a pen and a piece of paper, or define it on the spot. Later on, i would forget. But, if i have the Franklin with me, i can turn it on(takes less than 5 sec.) and search the word. Also, if u choose to turn the feature on, you can have a word-learning feature that will teach you a new word every time you turn the device on. It is very useful. Also, it is very convenient. It has games, a calendar, time, and even an address book. So, if you are one of those people who are trying to save time searching up words instead of flipping through big dictionaries, the Franklin is the best.

4 out of 5 stars I'm happy with it   April 21, 2010

I am reading a Jungian psychology book and many of the words are new to me. I've probably looked up and saved 50 words so far with only two or three that were not found. The save feature has been a wonderful bonus. It's compact size is also nice making it easy to carry around.

There are some annoying aspects. You will probably need to know the exact spelling of much of the word. It desperately needs a light for the screen, unless you are in a very bright space it is hard to see the words. The contrast really did not help much and I have a hard time using it at night which is my favorite time to read. It's also annoying to have to press the menu button everytime I turn on the device in order to get to the dictionary. The speaking device only applies to English words, the words do sound quite clear to me but they are spoken fast.

If you are interested in a collegiate dicitonary with a lot of extras then this will be a good buy but if you are looking for more than a basic translation of other languages you may want to research other devices before making your choice. I do really enjoy this dictionary as a whole and I'm sure that I will find many more uses for it in the future.
